‘The best –selling Sunday paper’? by Joe McVeigh

When I read this headline last week I almost got sick: ‘Sunday Independent – Still Irelands best-selling paper!’

What does this say about Ireland and the Irish people who buy this rubbish week after week? There is one columnist that I sometimes read when I get a chance without having to buy this heap of rubbish and that’s Gene Kerrigan. He usually has something worthwhile to say. But look at the rest of their pathetic so-called journalists  – Eoghan Harris, Eilis O Hanlon. Brendan O Connor, Emer O’Kelly and Ruthless Dudly Edwards.  Where would you get the like of them for negativity and rudeness and ignorance and arrogance?

Nowhere else in the civilised world would you get the likes of these dreadful scribes and that includes the National Inquirer in America.

Nowhere else in the world would you get so many native journalists spewing hatred for their own people and getting so much coverage every week in what is claimed to be ‘the best selling paper’ in Ireland. Have the Irish people lost all respect for themselves by buying this rag every Sunday and making this the best-selling paper?  It is indeed a sad reflection on modern Ireland if this is the best we can do. No wonder this country is in the sorry state that it is in if this is the best kind of paper it can produce every week!

Agreed, Joe, but I suppose it’s the same the world over. Owners of newspapers, like O’Brien are multi-millionaires and their default politics will always be right wing/conservative. It’s all about the money for these people. What goes hand in hand with those political views are things like, royalty, elitism, and zero compassion for who they would perceive to be the losers in society: the dispossessed, disenfranchised.
They will always promote closer ties with Britain ( the elite in their eyes) over justice for their fellow countrymen ( the losers in their eyes) and these right wing journalists are merely encouraged by the editorial/ownership ideology to write what they do.
It’s much the same in England with Murdoch, Barclay Bros and Lord Rothermere driving the right wing agenda for the times, daily telegraph etc.

You forgot to mention that fantasist Jim Cusack.

I agree. I’ve never paid money for the FG Independent but downloaded their free app to my phone some time ago. I quickly found it was a waste of memory space and uninstalled to make room for my 4 year old grandson’s Talking Tom(cat).

Made my parents stop buying it in 1990’s. Is a views-paper, not a news paper.

I didn’t much like it when it was more Catholic than the Pope.

Though it then had some reasonable journalists.

But it must be among the most contemptible rags ever written now.

Is it something in the Irish psyche?
Surely in no other country would people regularly pay good money to be abused/insulted!

Excellent contribution with well-made and valid points. My only disagreement would be the belief that “Nowhere else in the world would you get so many native journalists spewing hatred for their own people and getting so much coverage every week.” What about the “Irish News”- which in fairness, rivals it for the ignorance, negativity and rudeness of it’s “journalists,” while routinely insulting the beliefs and mindset of the great majority of it’s readers. And yet- like in the case of the Indo, people keep on buying the rag and perpetuating it’s negativity. A strange old world we live in…

      Alan
What are the beliefs of the great majority of the readers of the Irish News?

Could we have a few examples ,Alan of the negativities which you claim to be present in the Irish News? Also some examples of the “rudeness “of its journalists? I note that Jim Gibney and Jarlath Kearney (both Sinn Fein members)are regular columnists!

The motley crew of “journalists” at the Irish News range from county down castle catholics to dissident groupies and all things in between united in their hatred of SF.

Nor should one overlook the broadcasting wing of the DOBlin monominded media empah, Joe, a chara.

Where in Noosetalk fm and Toady fm (aka Newstalk fm and Today fm) the dissing of the GAA plumbs even deeper depths under the airwaves in what can only be described as an Orange Submarine aka the U-boat called ‘Irony’. (A favoured mode of transport, seemingly, for aficionados of the Off-shore Account)

The name is taken from the origins of Denis O’Brien’s unfathomable moolah. This is where Michael Lowry,TD aka the Tipperary Torpedo entered the frame-up. In the mid-1990s as Minister for Communications (aka the Blueshirt for Bluetooth) this fixture on the fixer circuit facilitated Esat Digiphone in its acquisition of an uber- lucrative mobile phone licence.

As the Moriarity Tribunal concluded in its second and final report of 2011. As a result of which the Doll’s House passed an, erm, all-party motion calling on M. Lowry to resign his seat.

The above commercial communications facilitation, incidentally, was the equivalent of having one’s consortium successfully covered by a billion-dollar stallion in the Coolmore Stud, County Tipperary.

This is where the irony enters the sole-infested waters of the national soul.

Back in 1979, as a FG politico on the make the matchless Matchstick Man managed to become the youngest ever Chairman of the Tipperary GAA County Board. Just barely out of short pants, it was in this capacity that he oversaw the refurbishment of Semple Stadium, aka, the Temple of Hurling for the Centenary Final of 1984. And in the process, by golly, went hip to hip with heaps of lolly.

    No folding-stuff, no fee.

Fast forward now to the Present Tension.

Where one finds the Malta-addressee Denis O’Brien indulging in his favourite overseas hobby of funding the Republic of Ireland soccer, oops, football set up. Le ROI, c’est moi, as it were.

Last year, Martin O Neill and Roy Keane, that stroppy pair of poppy-wearing underachieving bainisteoiri/ managagment tagalong team were marked noticeably absent from the Corporate Boxty Brigade at the All-Ireland Football, oops, bogball final, even though they happened to be in Dublin at the time.

Or, even, maybe because. Seems like they had to abruptly absent themselves at an overseas gig that particular Sunday, at a game involving an oval ball, possibly in Twickers or was it Candlestick Park itself, before the lights went out ?

Not easy being on a million squid contract: the detailed terms and conditions in the microsoft print can be a real divil. Ah, de Triumph of F.A.i.lure.

Noosetalk fm is also where DOBlin’s resident comedian, Declan ‘Game for a Scaff’ Lynch likes to strut his verbal stuff while taking a break from his break-winding towards the bogball in the Sindo.

Being a West Brit native of Westmeath, as his anus mundi accent of Athlone remorselessly reminds one, this automatically makes the Pierpoint of point-scoring against the game involving points, a fanatical devotee of Liverpool FC. It being a geographical truth, universally acknowledged, that the Shannon is a natural tributary of the Mersey.

The greatest contribution of the guy with the garrison town mentality to the Q’s English in the cage-rattling pages of the Sindo is, of course:

    -Eejitry.

Which is invariably tacked on to such predictable targets as the GAA, SF and Gaeilgeoiri by the hack from the outback.

    But, stay, here’s a thing.

In the last few days a bid has been made by a Chinese Communist Capitalist Consortium (a daaarling phrase, Joxer) for (gasp) Liverpool FC to the ping-pong tune of (gulp) 800 million squids. Think of all those extra red gansey units which could be shifted on the Oriental Market, Mao !

.Perhaps, even resulting in the eventual re-location – rock, stock and barrel ! – of the Liverpool FC franchise to (sob) the allied Chinese banks of the Yangtze, as distinct from the banks of the outbid Mersey.

But, stay a little longer,, here’s the real rub, the uber kicker..

The name of the Chinese Communist Capitalist Consortium (a daaarling etc) is – bress my soul and hope to die !:

    -C.I.C.

Yes, indeed, the very identical Leprechaun word for ‘kick’. Heavens below, the bogballers even organize an event called An CIC Fhada / The Long Kick. What sort of pickle will this leave the Sindo’s ukulele-playng window –cleaner , Dec ‘The Neck’ Lynch?

Will the West Brit be compelled to look through the Sindo window beyond the Near East , way beyond to the Far East itself? How sweet and sour a prospect will that be.

    Whither Eejitry ?
