Between the end of the Irish Civil War in 1923 and the Niemba Ambush in the Congo in November 1960 not a single member of the Irish Defence Forces was killed in action.
The happy hiatus in Irish military deaths was a direct result of the supposed failure of the 1916 Rising. No man living in Ireland was conscripted for military service during a century when men living in Britain were conscripted for Imperial service in mainly disreputable campaigns. This too a result of the “failed” Rising.
Within 14 months of being sentenced to death for his part in the Rising Eamon de Valera won a Parliamentary by-election in Clare, caused by the death in action in Flanders of John Redmond’s brother. At the hustings De Valera wore the uniform he had worn during the Rising, and stood under a banner quoting Amhran na bhFiann with the legend “Soldiers Are We.” His election prompted Lord Wimbourne, His Britannic Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant in Ireland , to write confidentially to the Cabinet in London saying that John Redmond’s Irish Party was a dead duck and Republicanism was in the ascendant. (I paraphrase).
W.T. Cosgrave, another Easter Week veteran who had been sentenced to death, won a Parliamentary by-election in Kilkenny in 1917.Every Irish Government for the past 98 years has been led by veterans of the Rising, or parties which were founded by them. The Irish Labour Party, which has never led a Government, was founded by James Connolly, who was not only sentenced to death for his part in the Rising, but shot for it.
Correction, Arthur Griffith was President of the Dail Eireann Cabinet from January 1922 until the Dail and Republican Courts were shouldered aside by the Anomolous?/Irregular? “Provisional Government” Junta in June 1922. Though he took no part in the Rising, Griffith stood by the Insurgents.
L.O.L. once stood for “Loyal Orange Lodge” but is more often today interpreted as “Laugh Out Loud.”
Dublin University (Trinity College) has in its time produced such luminaries as Edmund Burke, Oliver Goldsmith and Theobald Wolfe Tone, and expelled Robert Emmet. It is sad to see its name coupled with the Orange Order in this day and age. What next – the Ku Klux Klan?
God Help the poor fellows if they must cite Seamus Murphy SJ, who claims that Daniel O’Connell never shot a man. The Jesuits have a well earned reputation for learning and for subtle reasoning, not normally associated with the Orange Order, Perhaps the whitest of flocks harbours a black sheep, if not a Black Preceptor?

BROTHER APRIL 19, 2016 NEWS
We are planning to re constitute the Trinity College Lodge that went into darkness in 1966.
Initially it is proposed that the Lodge will be a Lodge of Limited purpose open to all associated with the College and who are existing members of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland.
The logo was taken from one of the early minute books of the Lodge and we also have a copy of the Original Rules governing the Lodge. On reading both documents it would seem that the purpose of the original lodge was to foster social interaction between its members at a monthly dinner.
While times have changed we believe through a combination of modern technology, seasonal meetings and a social event we can bring brethren together who share similar views and ideals. If we attract sufficient interest we will proceed to seek a warrant.

For the craic and only for the craic, I clicked on the link provided as one likes to broaden ones horizons. Low and behold it says click here if you wish to join no matter where in Ireland you’re from. Duly did so and it then says clearly only if you’re from ROI. Seems they do share a definition of Ireland being merely 26 counties with their Northern brethren.
The FINANCIAL TIMES used run an advertisement saying –
“NO FT. NO COMMENT.”
Seeing that the cat seems to have caught the tongues of the usual begrudgers it seems
“NO MT. NO COMMENT.” may be appropriate?
And “BILLY” hasn’t yet taken up his cudgel to defend the LOL.
