I’ve nothing against students or radicals who want a different way of doing politics and ultimately a better world. In fact, on many things we are singing from the same hymn sheet. But something struck me recently as really rather peculiar – After writing substantively about the jackboot antics of GARC at Ardoyne’s contentious strip, I came under the sharp criticism of “activists” (and I use that term loosely) from People Before Profit. Now at first I found it a bit surreal – a supposed Trotskyist, “non-sectarian”, student led organisation rushing to the defence of a “blood nationalist”, virulently intolerant, quasi-fascist group like GARC; who disgustingly harangued a respected local cleric then toasted vodka shots to it in the Shamrock club after (as photographed and reported by the Sunday Life). Ideologically, it’s a marriage bequeathed in political hell. Or simply “dancing with the Devil by the pale moonlight”, as the Joker opined. And there’s a few Jokers among their ranks alright! To non-political animals unlike myself, it’s best summarised by the age old saying that “my enemy’s enemy is my friend!”
One of their activists mentioned, in particular, that my writings focus on ridiculing anyone who is “anti-status quo”. I could write a book about this assertion but I’ll try to be as abstract and clear as possible. This is coming from “activists” in a party (People Before Profit), which is never done telling us that it is neither nationalist nor unionist, and therefore has no real position when it comes to the North. This is coming from a party which is encouraging you to accept a fake dichotomy in assuming that the Irish people as a whole, North and South, are not a sovereign nation, but rather “Northern Ireland” in their minds is a supposed independent state which has powers of self-government (like a currency to devalue) and the ability to legislate for their brand of Trotskyite socialism if it so chooses. This is coming from a party which is trying badly to distract from the fact that economically you CANNOT have socialism on this island while there exists two states competing against each other for investment from big business.
Let me explain what I mean, so it can’t be twisted. The Irish people voted, in overwhelming numbers for independence in 1918. Faced with the election result, Edward Carson continued to illegally arm his followers, with guns, bombs and grenades. The British Government had issued arrest warrants for the sedition committed by the Unionist leaders, especially in war time, but when the British forces stationed in Ireland protested about having to facilitate this, the Westminster Government backed down and capitulated to the will of the Loyalist mob. Lloyd George, Churchill and the “Tory intrigues” decided that they would partition the country along religious and political lines. There were a number of key motivations behind this – dividing the Irish people made it easier for Britain to rule them; Unionist politicians propped up successive Tory administrations; But most importantly, partition meant Britain could keep check on Irish affairs and operate a policy of “containment” (especially through her agents) to prevent any prospect of socialism happening on their doorstep (which would give the British working class ideas).
So British policy in Ireland following partition has been akin to American policy in Vietnam, Korea and elsewhere, whereby they will invade and occupy a section of a country and turn people against one another (in economic or religious competition particularly) to inhibit the prospect of a single united country utilising all its resources and opting for a radically different economic model. Pakistan was once a part of India, until Britain did the same thing there. Hong Kong was once a part of China until similar things happened there.
Now I’m not saying I’m against a socialist society emerging in Ireland at all, but what I am outlining as fact is that it can only happen in a united Ireland, independent of British economic & monetary policy. That’s not my view, it’s reality. What we have to spend is decided by people we do not elect and cannot remove, in Westminster. So the sensible solution is to move to set of circumstances where we can remove the people who govern over our lives by the ballot box, purchasing with our votes that which our wallets and purses deny us. An Ireland where socialism on the ballot paper is actually possible and can be facilitated.
So this falsehood which People Before Profit are peddling is utter nonsense. And I’ve been around long enough to sense when someone knows what they are implying but isn’t being open and transparent about what they actually know deep down. Given that analysis, it’s not unfair to say that People Before Profit are indeed a de-facto Unionist party. Why so? Because they accept the status quo that is “Northern Ireland”, and want to make you think that this failed, former-Orange state can become some sort of ‘cold water Cuba’ under their leadership and within the capitalist confines of the United Kingdom; which is quite frankly absurd. Why would a Westminster Government pay for Trotskyite socialism in “Northern Ireland” while implementing a bedroom tax on working class people in Britain, just because People Before Profit demand it?!
Myself, Jude Collins and other writers/commentators have repeatedly put this point to People Before Profit and repeatedly they have glossed over it. Gerry Carroll deleted me from Facebook to prevent me from asking it further in the public domain. Dodging the elephant in the room. But don’t take my word for it – If you read the writings of Tony Benn, Ken Livingstone, George Galloway, Harold Wilson, James Connolly, Chris Mullin, Jeremy Corbyn and many other prominent people on the Left in Britain and Ireland, you will discover in their independent analyses of British policy in Ireland exactly what I’ve just said – that Northern Ireland exists to try to prevent socialism on the island. Why? Because it would otherwise be a beacon of equality that would motivate the British masses to overthrow an old order and form anew. So why do we have a peace process and power-sharing for then? Because Britain is trying to slow down the inevitable – an independent self governing nation with the freedom to live under whatever economic model it chooses as a proud and sovereign Republic at peace with itself.
But back to the genesis of this article – a People Before Profit surrogate jumping to the defence of Dee Fennell and GARC. A man who has emerged as the real leader of dissident fringe elements (who dare not challenge him publicly but can’t stand his conduct privately) in Ardoyne; A man who is trying to make a career out of stirring up divisions within local communities in North Belfast. Now I’ve been called many colourful things by GARC members, with the most sickening personal abuse being thrown at anyone who speaks out against their tactics/rhetoric. And I mean sickening is an understatement. But for well-educated, rather better informed student radicals to align themselves with or defend the ultra-green, “blood nationalists” of Dissident extremism and Saoradh (who are clearly authoritarians); does that not seem a bit out of place? A bit of a proverbial (and I’m laughing as I write) ‘pig in a poke’? (LOL).
If anyone wants to know where People Before Profit was spawned, they need only read up on the failure of the Official IRA (“The Lost Revolution” book perhaps?) and their failure to achieve any meaningful concessions or change from the British Government. Rancid “Sticks”, who abandoned everything and accepted the legitimacy of the Orange State (collaborating with the RUC against republicans) and leaving Nationalist communities to fend for themselves against the Loyalist militias and state death squads. People Before Profit are the recycled bones of the Worker’s Party’s failed past, and it’s completely and utterly contemptible what they would misguide you into believing. But even worse, it’s farcical who they are prepared to opportunistically align themselves with for the sake of votes.
Instead of encouraging Dissident thugs (who’s anti-Sinn Fein votes he so desires) to damage the environment and waste public resources on unwanted bonfires, perhaps Eamon McCann should best divert his scrupulous attention to addressing the rotten borough of policy anomalies that he leads. Or maybe even exercise that age old wisdom that “no company is better than bad company!”

Correct me if I’m wrong but I do not believe that Carsonites between 1912 and
1922 were ever charged with sedition, treason felony or high treason. Nor have
I heard of any case where they were tried for assault, battery or muder.
After 1922 they were even more immune from the law.
Again, correct me if I’m wrong.
“The Irish people voted, in overwhelming numbers for independence in 1918.”
No they didn’t. There were many uncontested constituencies.
“Faced with the election result, Edward Carson continued to illegally arm his followers, with guns, bombs and grenades.”
He did? Have you evidence of this?
“The British Government had issued arrest warrants for the sedition committed by the Unionist leaders, especially in war time,”
Have you a source for this?
“There were a number of key motivations behind through her agents) to prevent any prospect of socialism happening on their doorstep (which would give the British working class ideas).”
Eh? There was no prospect whatsoever of socialism in Ireland, a rural, conservative Catholic country. Ironically the region most ripe for socialism was Belfast, which remained in the UK.
“So British policy in Ireland following partition has been akin to American policy in Vietnam, Korea and elsewhere, whereby they will invade and occupy a section of a country and turn people against one another (in economic or religious competition particularly) to inhibit the prospect of a single united country utilising all its resources and opting for a radically different economic model.”
No it wasn’t. There was no invasion or occupation and people had already turned against one another, with partition the result. Not the other way round.
“Pakistan was once a part of India, until Britain did he same thing there. Hong Kong was once a part of China until similar things happened there.”
It was the Muslim.people of India who wanted their own state, not Britain. Your contempt for democracy and self-determination is appalling.
Hong Kong isn’t remotely similar to India and Pakistan.
“Now I’m not saying I’m against a socialist society emerging in Ireland at all, but what I am outlining as fact is that it can only happen in a united Ireland, independent of British economic & monetary policy. Why do you think a socialist society is more likely I’m a future ‘united Ireland’ than in the UK?
Would it be possible to create a Socialist society in Liverpool while remaining part of the UK?
“Would it be possible to create a Socialist society in Liverpool while remaining part of the UK?”
Socialist policies could obviously be pursued within the ambit of the Liverpool council. But a socialist society could only exist if the UK became socialist.
Why do you ask?
What policies could be “pursued within the ambit of” the Stormont Assembly given that they rely on a budget that is determined by Westminster?
Do you think Britain will ever become a socialist society?
“What policies could be “pursued within the ambit of” the Stormont Assembly given that they rely on a budget that is determined by Westminster?”
Any policies they like. The Assembly has free rein to spend that budget as it wishes. Why do you ask?
“Do you think Britain will ever become a socialist society?”
I don’t think anywhere will. Why do you ask? Do you?
Can someone please explain this please, is it an anti PBP or anti GARC rant or just a rant against any one this lad doesn’t like in the hope someone at SF reads it and gives him a job in the propaganda section. I’m at a loss to see what this piece of writing hopes to achieve other than show someone might need a new hobby.
.who abandoned everything and accepted the legitimacy of the orange state (collaborating with the ruc against republicans)sounds like history repeating itself.
Fáilte ar ais billy. Nice holiday?
Eamonn McCann, while he may be neither green nor orange, is definitely grey where it matters, and he’d be the first to tell you so himself. One has but to look at that big, bald, soccer-balled shape of a head of his.
He’d also be the first to tell you that he is messianic in his atheism. (One can but stand back and gawk in awe and envy him his C for Certainty).
But of course, just as that laid-back, always-on-the-verge-of-a-swoon crooner, Dean Martin, used to philosophically opine ‘Everybody loves somebody sometime’ so also, according to logical positivism, does ‘Everybody believe in somebody sometime’.
That sometime is now, for the McCann Man . Or at least it was when he was The Man who is Thursday in the The Unionist Times:
-Arsene Wenger can teach us all a Lesson in Decency.
Now, even allowing for the indisputable fact that this piece appeared on, erm, December 31, 2015, nonetheless the mouthpiece for People before Profit was patently heartfelt in his worshipful words for he whom he would promote as the Prophet before People.
Arsene W, is, course, the Arsenal boss and not for nothing is he affectionately known as The Salamander Man. So profound of gloom, bereft of smile, cold of soul is he that he could well be a denizen of those dark and dank subterranean regions in the cave system of Slovenia itself.
Did one mention that The Salamander Man is on a cool Eleven Million Squids a year, one for each of his paltry-paid first team players?
Not unlike Eamonn McCann, the Salamander Man would seem to be able to make a good fist of making, erm, N’s meet.
Since his Ascension into Cloud Nine, oops, Six over Stormont the spokesman for the People before Profit has handed over the baton of The Man who is Thursday in The Unionist Times to one, Newton Emerson. This slot says a lot about the whatness of the paper of record: it is exclusively and unapologetically reserved for those who whistle the tunes of the Yune.
New man Newton comes across as comically pally and so is, inevitably and affectionately nicknamed ‘The Newt’ by his swooning fans among Southern Yunes. Curiously, a newt is a subspecies of, erm, salamander, but this may be just coincidence. Just one of those things, like a trip to the moon on gossamer wings, as a certain songwriter used to sing. (C under Porter).
THE MEN WHO ARE THURSDAY
One ‘s a chap who won’t wear a suit
Though no longer a youth or hirsute
D’Arsenal he licks
Green p’s he kicks
The other is just happy to inherit his loot.
The original Thursday Man was a Trot. The original Trot certainly could not have picked a nicer looking spot in Mexico City to have an ice pick stuck in his head: Coyoacan.
Think, if a Northern Yune, the Malone Road; think, if a Southern Yune, Ailesbury Road.
It was the legendary Mexican muralist Diego Rivera and fellow artistic muchacha who invited the Trotskies to stay with them in the latter’s La Casa Azul / The Blue House. Surprisingly, this muchacha was not called Muriel but rather Frida Kahlo.
When an exhibition of Kahlo’s art was displayed in Dublin some years ago the noted fine art critic of The Unionist Times, Fine-minded Fintan O’T was so bowled over that he just stopped short of gasping:
-We all needa Frida.
Leon T certainly felt a needa and when Diego suspected the house guest of,erm, dipping his paint brush in Kahol’s pot (allegedly) it was exit smartly stage left for both Leon T and Mrs. T. Surprisingly, they only moved a mere toss of a paint pot away to the villa which might have been, but, equally surprisingly, wasn’t, named La Casa Roja / The Red House.
The lounge of which turned out , fatefully, to be Leon’s departure lounge.
TROTTING TO AND FROM THE FAIR IN RED SQUARE
The PBP are neither orange nor green
And must be seen never to have been
Whiter nor white
Each is a Knight
Of the Red Branch with a blue sheen.
No doubt a fascinating insight..7000people voted for Carroll in West Belfast….and it a de facto Unionist Party..you can fool some of the people all of the time
8,299 votes for Gerry Carroll in West Belfast. Ig you can explain to me why Unionists would vote for an all-Ireland socialist Party, I would be delighted to consider your response.
Starting to sound a bit obsessed with PBP now Donal. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure your rants will be doing much to rattle em.
This article is the most ridiculous scatter-gun smear imaginable. Donal takes us on an insane sweep about the ”students and radicals” to the ”Trotskyists” to ”the quasi-fascists of GARC” to ”de facto Unionists” to ”Rancid Sticks”. He sounds like an hysterical toddler having a temper tantrum where the insults just get more and more ludicrous.
Now, suspiciously, the one Party that escapes any criticism whatsoever is Sinn Fein, and so I think it is fair to assume that Donal does in fact have a dog in the fight. Why he doesn’t mention this is of course his own business. But his slurs make his tantrum everyone’s business.
For that reason, I would be more than happy to challenge Donal Lavery (or Sinn Fein surrogate) to a Public Debate at a time, place and venue of his choosing so we can dissect his absurdity in whatever detail he can cope with.
I look forward to hearing from you, Donal.
“Now, suspiciously, the one Party that escapes any criticism whatsoever is Sinn Fein, and so I think it is fair to assume that Donal does in fact have a dog in the fight. ”
He admits to canvassing in the election against Fennell and the SDLP. So he’s either a Provo, a unionist or Alliance.
MT, please don’t accuse people of being ‘Provos’ – members of the IRA.
People Before Profit are bringing a breathe of fresh air into everything North and South! Grassroots community activism everywhere 🙂
I read “The Lost Revolution”, and as far as I remember the Socialist Workers’ Movement (SWM), which spawned the Socialist Workers Party, was founded in Ireland by some guys from Portsmouth and had no Irish connection at all. They did at one stage flirt with the idea of joining up with the IRSP, but decided against it after some SWM members were shot at during the Stick/Urp feud while travelling in a car outside Waterford with Seamus Costello.
Furthermore, People Before Profit are for a united Ireland. A 32 County Socialist Republic. People Before Profit are really the SWP, which are part of the International Socialist Tendency that have organisation across the global, including Britain. Their objective is to establish Global socialism.
