Small but significant tweak

Most of you will by now have heard me moaning about the time it takes to run/moderate this site. It really is a reasonably pleasant way to spend time (most days) but it is very very time-hungry, so I’m going to try to speed up the showing of comments.

For a trial period, I’m going to set things so that someone who’s had a comment approved in the past can put up their comment and it should show immediately. Clearly this involves my trusting that people won’t include abuse or libellous material.  Since most people sensibly avoid these errors it shouldn’t be a problem, but if it becomes one I’ll have to think again or maybe revert to the ‘glacial’ (thank you, gio) pace you’re familiar with – that is, I have to approve each and every comment.

I’d be interested in your feedback on this new system and whether it’s worthwhile.

What is libel? Solicitors for Ruth Dudley Edwards threatened one publication for reporting that she denied being an agent of British Intelligence.

The publication refused to sign the retraction and no action followed for a jury to deliberate on.

The Solicitors described Ruth as “a distinguished historian.” Are lawyers reliable judges of such matters? Or were they relaying their instructions pedantically?

And how should one distinguish the work of such a client from the general run of the
historians’ profession, or even older professions?

Fair enough Jude. You got to cover yourself. I promise not to post any abusive or libelous material. Its a good site this, it would be a shame to see it go the way of politics.ie or slugger (free for all those sites are).

A biased historian I would say, but distinguished? Nah! And yippee for the speedy uppy process (technical terminology).

    You filthy rat

Jude, to do such is to invest a large amount of trust in all of those who contribute. I hope that none of us will break it.

To follow up of PF, I hope that none would willingly break it, but over the years how many well meaning people have inadvertently done so?
It mightn’t cost me much for making such a mistake as I am broke, but I would be anxious for someone as pecunious as yourself, Jude, because you might be jointly liable!

I agree to keep my comments polite.

But my main blogs will be as robust as ever. If not ro-bustier! And brassier than a brasserie!

      Donal
Why not simply be polite in both blogs and comments?

I just hope you haven’t opened up the mouth of hell, Jude., Ha ha.

It’s all good. You have the best blog for Ireland which means the Brits will do whatever they can to corrupt or bring down your site by whatever means the deem necessary. I understand the need for your shift but please introduce it periodically and without pattern so as not to let it be manipulated by your friends at Cheltenham.

Jude is a supporter (I think it fair to say) of Sinn Fein and is broadly positive about the peace process.
I would think the Brits would do whatever they can to keep it running, if they are bothered to do anything about it all.

I think it is a great idea Jude as it makes for better flows in debate.

Thanks, Pointis. You’ll note I’ve added a legal disclaimer in the About Me section. Not that I don’t trust all those who comment here but y’know – belt n braces sorta thing…
