The DUP forms a circular firing squad

screen-shot-2016-12-16-at-10-12-49screen-shot-2016-12-16-at-10-14-29

Just when you thought 2016 had finished throwing custard pies into the public’s face, we get Ashgate. Like Brexit and Trump, this one affects us in that the DUP have built a machine  to suck tens of millions out of the public pocket. Like Brexit and Trump, our little fit of the vapours is visited with particular ferocity on the largest party in the state. And while I am of course above schadenfreude, as I watched first Jonathan Bell and then Arlene Foster last night, the thought of two ferrets in a bag kept squeaking and bulging in my head.

Because it did make for compulsive viewing. There was a danger you could be distracted by imagining the use of winches to get Nolan’s jacket buttoned, or wondering who bought those cool shoes/boots Jonathan Bell was wearing, or who is Arlene’s brooch-supplier.  But the stuff the two people in question were saying banished all such potential distractions.

We all see different things, even when we’re witnessing the same event. Here’s what I heard and saw and thought.

  1. Jonathan Bell is either a very religious person or a repulsive hypocrite. He maintained that God had told him what to do – actually God and the late Ian Paisley (there is a difference). Three times he emphasized his truth-telling nature and three times he quoted Ian Paisley: “Tell the truth though the heavens fall”. If that wasn’t an appeal for the Free Presbyterian wing of the DUP to draw their swords and protect him, I’m a reincarnation of King Billy’s horse.
  2. Stephen Nolan really is a tear-jerker. Short of sticking a needle in Jonathan Bell’s bum, he did all he could to set him off on a carefully-televised crying jag. I suspect the only tears  Bell had were internal, and were tears of rage rather than tears of regret.
  3. Arlene’s very presence immediately after Jonathan Bell – a presence that hadn’t been trailed in advance – showed how seriously she and the rest of the DUP are taking this. In the early part of the interview she looked like a rattled woman; as it developed, she began to hit her stride, talking over Nolan when she felt the need to.
  4. Who was telling the truth and who was telling lies? So much minutiae were thrown at us, it was actually hard to tell. Bell leaned heavily on the Almighty (“I am a poor Christian but I have a great God”) to support what he said. His biggest playing card – the evidence of emails and documents for his claims – unfortunately weren’t available.
  5. Arlene played the he-buillied-me card. Jonathan “loomed over” her – just like Donald Trump did with Hillary Clinton in that TV debate. She also played the woman-as-victim card, indicating that Bell had bullied just about any female he could find on the hill. Bell might have had God on his side, but Arlene corralled the women’s vote, even using the magic word “abuse”. She was referring of course to verbal abuse. So here’s a question for you: can you see anyone or anything bullying Arlene? As a hard-boiled US politician said “I don’t get heart-attacks. I give ‘em”.
  6. Jonathan leaned a little bit too heavily on the ‘vulnerable people’ bit. Because the scheme was extended – against his wishes, natch – little children sick with cancer were being turned away. He could as easily have said because of comfortable chauffeured cars up on the hill,   or the building of roads, or the provision of education, sick children weren’t getting the medical attention they needed. But she blamed it all on the wood-chip scheme.
  7. Why, I ask (again), has no one shone a light on who was the supplier of the wood-chip pellets? Because if they were burning pellets in huts with open doors and windows, an awful lot of pellets must have been bought. So was there one company or several who supplied these pellets? Was one of them a huge wood pellet manufacturer based in Ballinamallard, not a million miles from Enniskillen.
  8. What will happen? Nobody knows, although I suspect that Arlene will survive and Jonathan will be left to twist in the wind. Except, that is, some flagrant abuse of power or similar is unearthed before Christmas. In which case all bets are off.
  9. People say “Isn’t it scandalous?” but behind their outrage lies a little devil who’s dancing with delight. What am I talking about? I’m talking about the amount of fun it can be, to watch people squirm and get annoyed and pretend they’re crying. Of course we don’t want our money poured into the horny hands of some Fermanagh farmer; but at the same time, it’s fun to see politicians squirm and try to justify the unjustifiable. Tune in on Monday and see if anyone can loom over Arlene and get her to give a straight answer about (i) Who came up with this wheeze in the first place? (ii) How could a half-smart minister not spot the fatal flaw in a half-arsed scheme coming out of her department?; (iii) Where have you hidden all those emails and directives that are crucial to the Bell case?

And to think that people say there’s nothing on TV at this time of year. Stephen Nolan, you have done the state some service.

THE BONFIRE of the BEAN A’ TI

The bullying bell sounds for the opening round
Pound for pound each DUP d’ other do pound

Actually this is not very funny or a wheeze. It is not about who put in a better performance last night, Jonathan Bell or Arlene Foster. It is not about whether Jonathan Bell was right to invoke God to justify his assertion he is telling the truth.

This is a massive scandal which has significant implications for the public finances in the North.

The need for an inquiry is paramount. The full facts need to be ascertained, responsibility apportioned and actions proposed. It is just not good enough for political commentators to say that Arlene will “probably” survive. It is about holding our politicians to account, yes and nationalist/republican politicians too, in the knowledge that if they indulge in wrong doing and corruption, there is a good chance they will held to account.

Funny that Jonathan had no crisis of conscience in the months that past after being notified by civil servants that there was an abhorrent waste of tax payers money about to happen. No qualms in September and not until October did the moral compass finally change his direction.

Funny too, that these deep seated religious emotions could remain bottled up for over a year after and not until the bbc get on the ball and start digging does God finally choose to speak to Jonathan to come clean. Perhaps God was giving him a tip off that it wouldn’t be long before the peelers would be on the case and best to get out now and throw enough mud towards partners in crime in the hope to distance themselves from corruption that surely someone needs to go to jail over.

Even Fine Gael were prepared to do the time for their crimes.

Not surprising that the DUP crooks will now put all blame on Jonathan. What we really need now is a criminal investigation to look at all documented and electronic evidence and for someone or someone’s to do time over the biggest robbery of the public purse in the history of these islands.

Stormont has already been irreparably damaged by this and proven beyond any doubt not to be fit for purpose, the spotlight should now be on the justice system and whether it is also fit for purpose.

    • Sherdy December 16, 2016 at 3:23 pm #

The programme was advertised that ‘Jonathan will tell the truth tonight’ – the implication being that he hadn’t been telling the truth previously!
So possibly God had told him that late redemption would be better than no redemption.
Or more likely he realised that the party intended to throw him to the wolves, and he didn’t want to die alone.
      Self-preservation is a wonderful motive!

” the biggest robbery of the public purse in the history of these islands”

Was that not the gift to Bankers?

“Stormont has already been irreparably damaged by this and proven beyond any doubt not to be fit for purpose, the spotlight should now be on the justice system and whether it is also fit for purpose.”

Well said J., Each ministry just looks after it’s own sectarian business, there’s no collective scrutiny of the entire executive, but wait, is that not what Marlene’s for?

Stormont’s future will be as a museum.
The GFA is dysfunctional by design, it is no more than a learning shop to allow political maturity to develop before its implementation.

Though I doubt anyone expected any of the lessons to have been as expensive as that provided by the DUP.

Unfortunately the peace process has been allowed to stagnate and divisions in Ireland have grown deeper and more acute.

Foster got her story mixed up on the whistleblower.

She blamed her officials for not placing a cap within the policy.

She blamed her officials for not later passing on a recommendation to place a cap.

She blamed her officials for not passing on whistleblower concerns.

She then went on to accuse Bell of being a sexist bully, he may well be but I can’t see anyone bullying Arlene going by the glare she gives any journalist with the temerity to ask her an ackward question.

Foster can put this to bed quite quickly. Bell has called for a Judge lead inquiry, Arlene should set it up.

What has she got to hide ?

I’ve no confidence whatsoever that Stormont left to it’s own devices will come within a postcode of the truth.

  6. Sherdy December 16, 2016 at 11:10 am #

Which of them, or was either of them telling the truth?
Having a lifetime’s experience of people publicly and humbly professing their religion, and then revealing their feet of clay, makes me wary of Jonathan’s version of truth.
Watching Arlene talking, and seeing her nose growing with every word she uttered, I am ultra wary.
Arlene was involved in the scheme from its inception, and apparently insisted that the British version wasn’t sufficiently generous, so she was instrumental in the introduction of the new ‘improved’ scheme.
But she says no one warned her of possible dangers or overspend, and the details seemed too complicated for her to fully grasp. But the details, basically, were that clients would not only get their fuel totally free, but would get a 60% bonus for every £ of pellets they burned.
And our First Minister, a qualified lawyer, could not figure out that would be expensive! A schoolchild sitting the 11+ would be failed for not being able to work that out!
Apparently when applications came in there was no inspection of premises to be sure the application was genuine – but yet when I wanted a £500 grant for a new gas boiler recently, two different bodies inspected my premises and my old boiler before my application could even be considered.
Jonathan told us of the paper trail which could prove the veracity of his story.
He should be careful in trusting paper, as recently at Charter 21 their certified financial documents (conveniently?) went up in smoke. Hopefully not by means of RHI pellets!

Besides Gods good advice to Jonathan why in these Six Counties do Nolan, Bell and Foster always refer to as “Our Country” Our country is Ireland.

I want to know how many scandals have the DUP been involved in since Big Ian and Martin began chuckling together?
So much has been swept under the carpet Stormont needs a large Dyson vacuum to clean up!!!! Even Gods appearance to put Jonathan on the right track may not have worked, perhaps a wee whisper to Arlene might help.To my mind some lessons in both Truth and Geography are required post haste. As to the future perhaps a RED SKY at night will be the DUPS delight.

  8. Scott Rutherford December 16, 2016 at 11:31 am #

There needs to be a judge led public inquiry into this. Stormonts public accounts committee is incapable of running any investigation.

If the DUP abuse the POC in order to block a independent inquiry SF should collapse the assembly and trigger a election.

Doubt the DUP will fancy a election at the moment.

    • jessica December 16, 2016 at 11:37 am #

“Doubt the DUP will fancy a election at the moment.”

Next step will have to be a Sinn Fein / UUP coalition.

what’s the odds on martin o muilleoir and mike nesbitt holding the joint office by 2018 billy?

      • Scott Rutherford December 16, 2016 at 11:50 am #

        I’d prefer a Alliance/UUP/SDLP government Jessica.

Any combination of these three is better than what we got now.

        • jessica December 16, 2016 at 11:59 am #

The DUP is the problem with what we have now and only 2 parties can contribute to OFM/DFM, all parties are open to taking seats on the executive – it is up the parties whether they want to or make up a pretend opposition.

          • Scott Rutherford December 16, 2016 at 1:29 pm #

I’m afraid I don’t share your high regard for SF Jessica.

          • jessica December 16, 2016 at 1:52 pm #

That is not up to unionists to decide Scott.

For all we know, a majority of unionists may be happy enough to have the DUP in power no matter how corrupt they may be.

          • Scott Rutherford December 16, 2016 at 2:19 pm #

Up for Unionists to decide what Jessica?

          • jessica December 16, 2016 at 2:25 pm #

Which party makes up the nationalist part in the OFM/DFM coalition

There will always be one nationalist and one unionist declared party.
I believe it will be Sinn Fein, any unionists regard for them doesn’t really matter and vice versa, hence the DUP may well be on top even after all this but they certainly haven’t helped themselves.

I don’t think they expected the heist to be as big as it was.

          • Scott Rutherford December 16, 2016 at 3:05 pm #

Are you sure your right about that Jessica?

What happens if the Alliance/Green/PBP become the biggest parties in Stormont. Can they not became First or Deputy First Minister just because they don’t declare themselves Nationalists or Unionists? Seems odd to me.

Also I don’t believe I ever said that it was up to Unionists to decide who would represent Nationalists on OFMDFM. I said my preference would be a mix of Alliance/UUP/SDLP. Any combination of the three.

no odds yet so far……..but paddy power is offering odds on a border poll being called by 2020..yes.9/2……no.1/8..so if you think a referendum will be called you need to put £800pound on to win a £100pound,not very good odds eh.

  10. TheHist December 16, 2016 at 12:23 pm #

A number of questions I took from both interviews?

    – Why did Foster put herself forward to be interviewed by Nolan having only heard a 2 minute trailer beforehand of Bell’s performance?

    – Arlene states in autumn 2015 her and Bell were equal – her as Finance Minister and him as DETI Minister – was Arlene not appointed as the “Gatekeeper” during this time (September 2015) to ensure an eye was kept on “rogue SF” – in her role as gatekeeper – was did she know about this scheme? Around this time, September 2015, Foster was the sole DUP Minister.

    – What did Peter Robinson know about the scandal?

    – If Bell is a bully and if he was aggressive to Arlene, was this reported to the party officers?

    – Arlene stated yesterday she has a witness to confirm that Bell was aggressive to her – Who is this witness? Two SpAds have came out and say they saw nothing as such.

    – Where is the evidence from both sides? Without evidence on either side, we are simply dealing with allegations

    – Is this scheme a failure of the institutions? What role did the executive and committees have in its scrutiny?

    – Should the SpAds and senior Civil servants linked to Foster and Bell appear before a Stormont committee ASAP and give their sides of the story?

My own view is that Nolan did not probe both Bell and Foster enough – at one stage Foster took control of the interview!

    • paddykool December 16, 2016 at 1:22 pm #

….in her role as Gatekeeper ,watching those nasty , unreliable nationalists who were never to get a chance at wasting the public’s money, when she was having that pleasure all for herself unbeknownst to the rest of us…..Pots calling kettles “black” again and all that, eh?

I knew it was going to be big and paused my usual late hour online PS4 sniper routine on Battlefield 1 (yes, I’m a keen gamer) to tune in.

Like the vast majority of people, I believe Jonathan Bell. Obviously nothing has been proven yet but I think Bell was going to be used as the Fall Guy for this crazy scheme, hence why he’s speaking out. Everyone and their dog knows this was no “accident” nor was it down to sheer incompetence on the part of the DUP. Something much more sinister, likely even illegal, could be at work here. Indeed Bell even says at one point: “I wasn’t going to break the law”.

Bell prayed before he did that interview and I was surprised it was filmed, I thought it was done behind closed doors. It was likely that he did that more to get fellow religious DUPers on his side than an appeal to God. But I do believe Bell is genuine in what he was saying and in his religious beliefs. The truth is the DUP really is quite a devoutly religious lot, which deserves to be respected and reciprocated from them.

In her interview, Arlene didn’t look comfortable, her face was strained and she looked shaken, even worried. That’s not the usual Arlene Foster. This isn’t the case of a nationalist attacking Arlene where she can depend on all of Unionism to back her up no matter what, this is a case of Unionists v Unionists. That alone makes it difficult for the DUP, substance rather than sectarianism matters. Though one thing that remained with Arlene was her arrogant and nasty attitude. Why she thinks that appeals to people only she knows.

You know Arlene was really up against the ropes when she proceeded to attack Jonathan Bell’s character. She claimed he intimidates her and other women, not men. She mentioned that he used his weight and height to do this. Now Bell isn’t exactly small but he’s hardly Andre the Giant either. She was playing the misogynist card, something very common with some women in our society today. That just shows how desperate Arlene really is now. Her and Bell have been friends since 1989 when they were at University together. They worked together for decades. Bell even said he was one of the first DUP politicians to sign his name to get her elected DUP Leader. Not once has any woman, including Arlene Foster, ever complained about Bell intimidating any woman until now. Even Sinn Fein’s Martina Anderson had a good working relationship with Bell for a long time. Everyone knows Arlene is talking nonsense and it just shows how low she has sunk in order to cling to her job, that she would make such serious and damaging allegations about her own friend…..

Needless to say Arlene should lose her job. It will be interesting to see what happens if the SDLP’s Motion of No Confidence passes. In my opinion, I don’t see how Arlene can keep her job, not after last night’s interview……

KC – I did say no undiluted abuse. Please observe same.

      • jessica December 18, 2016 at 8:39 am #

I don’t blame you for have doubts about him KC, anyone claiming God talked to them usually has serious issues.

Personally, I believe they were all in on it, Jonathan felt enough had been milked already and by October 2nd it was time to stop the gravy train before the bill got too great.

The DUP then tried to fit a few more of their business buddies in and delayed it, which he did not agree with and had real concerns about the cost, but was overruled and once the word got out it became a free for all and quickly spiralled out of control, just as he feared it might.

There was no almighty row between Arlene and Jonathan, just a frank exchange of views as reported by multiple spads present in the room that recalled no abuse between them. Someone is lying and I think both Jonathan and Arlene were exaggerating this argument to suit their own cover stories.

Thanks to the antics of hokey cokey politics, the DUP were also not on the ball and by the time it actually got stopped in mid November, 100s of millions of pounds were lost over this delay. Some gatekeeping from Arlene who stayed behind as a solo protector of the public purse. Or to ensure nationalists didn’t stick their noses in and find out what was going on for themselves.

Perhaps Arlene’s gatekeeping was keeping what was going on here under wraps and away from the other parties eyes and ears.

Jonathan knows full well this was deliberate and does not sit well with his faith, which clearly is profoundly deep.
He probably believes he is bound for hell unless he comes clean and this is what he means by God talked to him.

Basically he cant get it out of his head and by telling the truth, or at least some of it, he hopes to be able to live with peace of mind once more.

We should not underestimate the impact this has had on him, though clearly plenty in the DUP are not as religious bound and quite comfortable with theft of public purse money.

Though having said that, he seemed to be able to manage it before the public outcry.

The biggest problem I think is that the DUP still feel untouchable and that they can get away with this behaviour or anything they like it would seem.

Someone really needs to be prosecuted here and do real time. It that doesn’t happen it is not only Stormont that has been irreparably damaged but the whole justice system and the credibility of the Northern Ireland state which many of us know is unworkable and always will be.

It really boils down to how well this investigation is run. Will they go after deleted documents, emails can be recovered from backups, deleting them would require it admins to get involved and risk jail also.

If there is the evidence that Mr Bell suggests there is, then Arlene and her spad’s may not only be looking at losing their jobs but their freedoms and may well do time over this.

Everyone here seems to be referring to 400 million. As I am aware the gross figure is 1 billion of which 400, 000,000 comes from Stormont, the rest from an EU subvention. Which has ultimately to be paid for by the EU taxpayer which, for now at leasthe, includes us. There areally no free lunches.
