Jonathan Bell – remember him? For a while back there, you couldn’t turn on the telly without seeing his sad little face and worried forehead and – momentarily – tear-filled eyes. He did a lot of calling on the support of God at the time, even kneeling with his spiritual adviser before facing Nolan (a practice I’d recommend to everyone) but since then he’s been next to invisible.
Although maybe not if you were living down Strangford way, because that’s the constituency he is contesting as an Independent. Will he make it? That’ll depend on the good people of Strangford and whether they believed Jonathan when he said he was bullied by Arlene, or Arlene when she said she was bullied by Jonathan. “It is time for the truth” Jonathan is quoted as saying, but of course every time is time for the truth. So to what truth is Jonathan alluding?
Presumably his version of the RHI events. That is, that he was bullied into keeping the gate open for people to pile in and take advantage of the unbeatable £1.60 for £1 offer, or that he was the bully and was the one who saw to it the gate was left ajar.
It’ll all come out in the wash, as we used to say; the only problem being that the election will be well over by the time that happens.
If Jonathan is swept aside by the DUP machine in Strangford, he will find his life “bound in shallows and in miseries”. He’ll be yesterday’s man and the public will soon forget him. Should he succeed in tossing a sabot into the DUP machinery and sweep to victory, he will know what Shakespeare meant when he said “There is a tide in the affairs of men/ Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune.”
I don’t want to depress you, Jonathan, but I think you’re heading for the shallows.

Once more, like wee Arlene and Peter I attended QUB with Jonathan, and queerly, was on good terms with him, as with the minister (now) of education.
I always found Jonathan a decent sort of lad, albeit years later he lied as to why his Granda sold his business, my Daddi had, before me, gotten on with Jonathan’s Daddi, it had nothing to do with the paucity of Catholic customers to the shop which I am told was at least fifty percent.
He also mis led with his story of the murder of the man whose Father bought his Grand Father’s shop, a p/t major in the you’ll do rightlies, the only reason this well respected, and liked, man was shot by the ERP’s.
Perhaps the good persons, with their gutteral scots lingo, in Strangford will return him but, I suspect not, there’s always an opening for another Hans Christian Andersen.
I think you may be right, Jude, about him sinking slowly into the sands of Strangford Lough without trace.
He has intimated that the paper trail of emails etc are explosive, but if that explosion is only going to happen post-election after he has lost, it is of no consequence.
Much better for him would have been to leak/publish one or two condemnatory items every other day, to keep the public mind focussed on our worst ever scandal/corruption!
Maybe we could impeach the DUP leader?
