“Boy, if you were petrified, you’d be a standing monument to ignorance” was a cruel, if well-earned,remark made by an otherwise gentle Christian Brother to one of his pupils.
The boy couldn’t help it. It was bred in the bone. One of his classmates, standing near him watching a football game, remarked on the foul-mouthed remarks of a female spectator.
“Watch what you say about my Mother” he was told.
Reading the reaction of His Britannic Ignorance, Lord Tebbit, to the death of Martin McGuinness prompted those memories.
Many years ago Tebbit, speaking in Los Angeles, claimed that most American cities had an Anglo-Saxon origin. He might have made the same speech in Santa Barbara,
San Diego, Santa Fe, San Francisco, San Jose, Las Vegas, St Louis, New Orleans, and such places oblivious of their histories.
When republican prisoners were released to facilitate the peace process he claimed it unprecendented and when I wrote him informing him of the 1921 precedent of Sean
Mac Eoin who had been under sentence of death he wrote me an ignorant reply. So I told him that on his marriage MacEoin was given a present by the widow of an RIC man killed
in an action where MacEoin had treated the injured and dying with great humanity.
But Tebbit so cherishes ignorance and ill-will, I fear he may be beyond redemption. Though he might be spared by Invincible Ignorance from a reunion with the Iron Lady.

He is clearly a liar. I think his crippled wife has been faking it the past 30 years.
Wise up.
There seems to be a conveyor belt of bigots coming on to this site, is that accidental ?
Did anybody mention his wife?
yes – I did. I think if the IRA had crippled my wife, I wouldn’t be waxing lyrical about Marty the “peacemaker” either. Then again, those bastards killed members of my family, so I suppose that is why I can be just as vitriolic.
I think your vitriolic my nature Joe bloggs. Or, perhaps it’s the way you were brought up ?
Perhaps your reply indicates the way you were taught?
I’m a proud Catholic republican. And hand on my heart, I don’t hate anyone. I could catalogue a whole list of transgressions committed by British terrorists – some against me personally .
Maybe some of your family took up the gun, too, joe. Them that live by the sword etc.
You didn’t need to “take up the gun” to be murdered by the IRA fiosrach.
A neighbor of mine was killed for selling fruit and vegetables to a policeman.
John Haldane of Haldane and fishers builders was murdered because he sold timber to a builder who subsequently used it to work on a police station.
That was the IRA’s idea of a proportional punishment and a legitimate target.
Look at poor Lord Haw Haw. All he did was broadcast on the radio and he put out as much truth as The Butcher did. And the democratic English hung him.
Well the butcher would have hung him and indeed the democratic English hanged him.
Sean Mac Eoin was convicted of the murder of an RIC officer and probably killed quite a few more. His great humanity during the Civil War wasn’t that appreciated when Mac Eoin was accused of overseeing the murders and ill treatment of Irregular prisoners. He had a reputation for being trigger happy, I believe. Anyway, he was released before any agreement was concluded and his release not a condition of the treaty.
Was he not arrested after being sent by Collins to wipe out the Cabinet in London. If so, then it was a bit like Brighton, I suppose
Maybe that’s why Mr Tebbit was pissed off with you, Donal
