Britain has engaged in murderous repression in many places since 1945 in which scores of thousands of non-British civilians or resistance fighters have been killed by British forces. For various reasons including propaganda the British do not call them wars. In Malaya (1948-1960) the rubber planters and other merchants would have been refused insurance, or charged prohibitive premiums had the truth been acknowledged. When Bonaparte described the Brits as a nation of shopkeepers he may not have been far wrong. British casualties were relatively light and the conscript squaddies expendable to their bosses, but thousands were killed, forests defoliated by chemicals dropped by the RAF, tens of thousands consigned to concentration camps and hundreds of thousands confined to “Protected Villages” which may have been semantically different. In 1949 it emerged that a platoon of Scots Guards had murdered villagers in the kind of operation the Americans staged at My Lai in March 1968. In Kenya (1952-1960) even the Attorney-General, in a letter to the Governor General acknowledged that they were behaving towards the Kikuyu Africans as the NAZIS had behaved towards the populations of Poland and Russia. Unspeakable tortures of men and women and countless murders were inflicted by the current Queen’s Security Forces, and 1,100 Africans were hanged after farcical trials by that Gracious Lady’s agents. Ironic that THE IRISH TIMES and THE TIMES of London on successive days carried cartoons showing Martin McGuinness with his hands dripping with blood when he met with the ELizabeth Immaculate! I only mention two of the many bloody “EMERGENCIES” since 1945 and merely touch on them. Wikipedia may be a good introduction to them. And they go into more detail than I care to. During the years I covered the Irish Defence Forces were engaged in neither wars nor repression.
BBC’s documentary White Terror describes the actions of the British as “essentially Nazi in nature”. There’s opportunity for an equivalent exposé on the British actions in Greece in the 20th century.
