Brexit has ignited a fresh debate on what constitutes ‘democratic decisions’ on the island of Ireland.
British Unionists are increasingly suggesting, if the Irish nation on the island of Ireland want to reunite our nation, we must convince a majority of them to agree. Wrong. In our 1998 GFA peace deal, Unionists agreed to the principle of consent. That means, 50.1% of the population of N Ireland is all that’s required to approve reunification of Ireland.
The Irish nation was undemocratically partitioned at gunpoint in 1921, and if Unionists think they can again switch the goalposts they truly are utterly deluded.
British Unionism as a community are proven á la carte democrats, who must be obliged to now take stock of their moral foundations and specifically acknowledge three plain but fundamentally important historical facts.
Firstly, no foreign state or crown had any moral or legal right to occupy Ireland and usurp native Irish citizens personal land and property rights as enshrined in Ireland’s ancient Brehon laws (which egalitarian Irish laws considerably pre-dated Britain’s much-lauded Magna Carta of 1215).
Secondly, the 1800 Act of Union imposed upon Ireland was not endorsed by the Irish nation and consequently a foreign occupying British state lacked any moral or legitimate legal mandate to impose that colonial Union.
Thirdly, Ireland’s electoral majority made clear in 1918 its desire to end that undemocratically imposed colonial Union.
Basic moral codes of right versus wrong are timeless, as are the rules of natural justice that determine fair consideration of one’s case. These are the core tenets of a civilised society and must always be our barometer when seeking to evaluate any behaviour whether past or present. Moral democrats will readily agree, foreign British laws have never had any moral basis upon which to run writ anywhere in Ireland: that foreign state’s presence is founded upon immoral conquest, the usurping of Ireland’s native laws and denial of the expressed democratic will of the Irish nation.
Who gave foreign British supremacists their presumed right to decide what constitutes legitimate laws in Ireland i.e our ancient egalitarian Brehon laws?
Who gave foreign British supremacists their presumed right to ignore the 1918 expressed will of the majority of Irish voters to exit the United Kingdom Union?
Did a foreign British state have any moral or legitimate legal right to undemocratically partition Ireland at gunpoint in 1921? No. It had no right whatsoever to divide the Irish nation in Ireland, and that ongoing injustice must end.
In the June 2016 Brexit referendum, the desire of a majority of Northern Ireland aka Ulster was to remain part of the European Union. However, NI Unionist politicians insist that the will of the Westminster parliament is supreme and thus must prevail: it approved this referendum and formally endorsed the result. Given this stance, political Unionism must explain how it can sensibly contend that the will of the people of Ulster (be it the 9 or 6 county version) was supreme over Westminster’s will in 1912 but not supreme in 2016?
Notably, these Unionist á la carte democrats include the pro-UK Unionist-lite Alliance Party. Like their fellow British Unionists in the DUP, Alliance demonise as ‘divisive’ and ‘sectarian green’ any Irish politician who dares invite them to democratically engage in debating the reunification of Ireland.

don’t mean to be factious, but I always took the 50 + 1 to equal 51% rather than 50.1%
Actually 50% + one vote ….!!!
If it is 50.1% the other side is 49.9% therefore a majority. It doesn’t have to be 51 to 49.
“Basic moral codes of right versus wrong are timeless, as are the rules of natural justice that determine fair consideration of one’s case. These are the core tenets of a civilised society and must always be our barometer when seeking to evaluate any behaviour whether past or present. ”
Yea maybe so, but the only ones for thousands of years to live by those codes were the poor and defenceless. The rich and powerful in state and religion behaved exactly as they wished and dictated to their subjects how they should behave and what they should believe in. Repression, persecution, exploitation, execution, torture and slavery have been the order of the day throughout history and those who protested were given short shrift by Popes Bishops Captains and Kings ..!!
While I essentially agree with 99 per cent of the above, I wish Republicans would stop using the awful Unionist cum Free State term “The Island of Ireland”. Is there another Ireland I do not know about that is n’t an island?
This term lends credence to those who consider that “Ireland” is a 26 County truncated gombeen republic, that it and “Northern Ireland” , taken together, comprise the “Island of Ireland”. A two-tier concept of Irishness and we all know who the second class Irish are. A concept promulgated by people like Bertie’s lugubrious guru, Martin Mansergh who believes northern nationalists should join in centenary celebrations for the establishment of the Stormont regime.
There is only one Éire/ Ireland. It preceded partion by two millenia and will remain when partition has gone. Let’s say goodbye to “The Island of Ireland”. Fáilte aráis, the thirty two counties of Ireland, ‘Ireland’s 32’.
Wrong. A 50+1% vote in a partionist sectarian headcount of a border poll will not deliver Irish unity. It then has to go to another partionist poll in the 26 counties; then on to Westminster for parliamentary approval; then onto the House Of Lords; then needs Royal ascent; then needs a vote in Leinster house.
The only poll that will deliver Irish unity, is an all Ireland referendum on Irish unity, which doesn’t exclude anyone, and that empowers everyone equally. One Ireland One Vote.
Best article I have read here in a long time, straight forward and honest but some people cannot handle the truth and would prefer “alternative facts” to suit their own agendas.
In a 32 county state would those from the 6 counties be expected to help pay back the 200 Billion Debt which the 26 counties have accumulated to date.In the 2014 Scottish Referendum the Scots were told that they would have to be responsible for their share of the National Debt. The 6 counties share of UK national Debt is approx £50 Billion representing 2,8% of the total-Is the 26 county taxpayer expected to shoulder this burden?
Discuss
No, they wouldn’t.
Giving that Britain partitioned Ireland and has ultimately made it a War zone from that day until present the economy has suffered. Would that illegal act of terrorism not happened the debt wouldn’t be here today.
good old unionists always mentioning money, the republic of Ireland’s economy reunite the norths!! No one gives a shit about Northern Ireland and it will never flourish under the FAILING United Kingdom.
oh and would the 26 counties pick up the bill for arlene foster misplaced half a billion ?
50% plus one vote. That’s all we need and it’s coming
I reckon they would pick up the money for RHI after all they were happy to bail out Anglo Irish for much larger sums of money-had to be borrowed of course so no 6 county or GB taxpayers should contribute towards 26 county self imposed Debt mountain
