Noel Murtagh (April 15) would have Ireland join NATO and cites Finland as a good example.
In June 1942 when Hitler and his friends were well into their stride in murdering Jews,
Russians and others, Finland was allied with the German Nazis.
On 4th June Hitler was in Finland to congratulate its leader, Marshal Mannerheim on his
75th Birthday. A sound recording of their meeting appears to be the only one of the Fuhrer
speaking in conversational, rather than megaphone mode.
It seems to me that NATO was founded, not for defence but for aggression. Since Hitler
had the decency to shoot himself, France, Britain, Holland, and little Catholic Belgium
have inflicted horrors on half the world with no moral justification. Not to mention the
United States.
David Cameron had the gall to declare, in St Petersburg, of all places, that Britain had
defeated Fascism. Britain Intelligence bank-rolled Mussolini’s newspaper from 1917
and King George V dubbed that ex-Socialist a Knight of the Bath in 1923. Mussolini
rated the Daily Mail his favourite British newspaper, and even wrote for it, a precedent
followed by that other Knight of the Bath, Sir Keir Starmer, recently.
From 1932 for many decades, particularly under Fianna Fail, Ireland pursued rational,
ethical, and largely successful policies at home and abroad.
The League of Nations is a taboo subject in Britain and real history has been suppressed
in Irish schools. Ireland adhered to the League’s Covenant, virtually alone among its signatories. When Japan attacked Manchuria, De Valera demanded in vain, that the League apply effective
sanctions. When Mussolini’s Fascists attacked Abyssinia, De Valera was alone in demanding support
by the League for effective action and was ready to commit Irish troops to a League force.
Ireland’s Blue Shirt Fascists gave their immoral support to “Catholic Italy.”
Ireland did not scab on its international duties.
Britain made Mussolini pay for the Rape of Abyssinia, into the coffers of the British-owned
Suez Canal Company. For the Rapists, with their weapons and supplies would otherwise have had
to travel via Gibraltar and around the Cape of Good Hope to have their wicked way with
their victims. At Geneva, Anthony Eden, whose name will forever be linked with Suez, dismissed
De Valera as a Hot Head, or some such fool.
In the 1970s, when British Paratroopers in Cyprus were supposed be be under United Nations
command, they paraded under their officers and burned the UN Blue Berets.
Scabbing on international commitments was not an Irish tradition.
Angela Merkel revealed in December that the Minsk agreements which she helped frame were
signed, not to bring peace to Russia and Ukraine, but to allow NATO and the Ukraine Regime
to further threaten Russia.
The establishment in Ireland, which now includes Sinn Fein has rubbished the constructive work
of De Valera and Frank Aiken for peace in Ireland and the World.
The balance of justice in Eastern Europe is with Russia, whose heroic people contributed most
in the liberation of Europe from Fascism.
