RE “FOR STRATEGIC REASONS …….THE ATTLEE DOCTRINE” my Blog yesterday – by Donal Kennedy

It’s been remarked to me that some readers will doubt my credibility unless i can back them up with
irrefutable proof.

A fair point. The  Royal Society in London, founded in 1660 on the restoration of the Stuart Monarchy, in imitation of a similar body in Paris, had a motto, the gist of which was that things which can’t be proven should not be swallowed whole. And when a young girl asked Karl Marx for his autograph he wrote “Doubt everything.” Thus Scientific Method was applied to there islands.

Not long very long before that, a Dublin man, ackowledged one of the cleverest in these islands, from a perusal of the Old Testament, asserted that the earth was less than 6,000 years old. He was the Anglican Archbishop of Dublin, James Ussher when he published his findings.

My Catholic Penny Catechism in the 1940s issued under the Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat of John Charles McQuaid, the least Ecumenical Prelate of his times, supported Ussher’s long disproven findings.

I doubt many Catholics believed them in the 1940s and suspect many believe nothing at all today.

But millions of American Protestants and great numbers of Protestants in the North of Ireland stand
by Ussher, even if too pious to swear by him. Anyway under the 30 year Rule the text of Sir Robert    Brook’s Memorandum, marked “noted” by Clement Attlee, was released by the British Public Records Office in late 1979 and reported, without comment in THE IRISH DEMOCRAT, the monthly organ of the CONNOLLY ASSOCIATION in January 1980.
