Donald J Trump has an emotional impact on many people. Some go into a kind of idolatrous trance, chanting his name and crying ‘Make America Great Again!’. Others look worried or depressed and begin to mutter about the fact that Trump is not just obnoxious but a lying tub of mysogynistic lard.
His many followers will have feared for their idol yesterday, when a bullet pierced his ear, missing his face by an inch or two. They will have felt a surge of pride as Trump’s face, with a squirm of blood on it, emerged briefly from a scrum of secret servicemen to shake his fist defiantly.
His many detesters, among whom I number myself, will wonder what impact this assassination attempt will have on the November election. They will fear the national wave of sympathy of the wounded candidate, and how it may ultimately surge him to the White House.
What none of those reporting the violent event has suggested is that it might have been a pretend-assassination.Certainly Trump will milk the attack for all it is worth. But if I’m honest, what I heard were a number of cracking sounds, Trump bringing his hand to his ear, disappearing beneath his protection team, then emerging with a trickle of blood running down his face, to shake his fist defiantly.
If you hesitate to accept my suggested conspiracy notion, you’re probably right. That Trump’s team would organise something so dramatic seems so dishonest, it’s barely worth considering.
But do you think the lying tub of lard would be incapable of engaging in such a strategy? Of course he would. His followers see him as a messianic figure. With blood trickling down his face as he shakes a defiant fist fits perfectly into the Saviour image he wants to create.
Maybe too perfectly?

If you are correct and Trump and his coterie set up this event then things have certainly gone over the edge. The shooter was shot dead as well as one of the attendees. So this would rank as the greatest crime in American history.

Whether or not it is a set up I personally can’t say, nothing would surprise me. What I do know for sure is Trump will monetise the event, glossy colour pictures of his bloodied ear, signed in Sharpie will be on sale soon. His deluded supporters will snap them up and believe all the nonsense he spews.
