My BLOG here arises from AN IRISH DIARY piece by Ronan McGreevy “Geography and Destiny” on November 4th, Cormac Moore’s long chapter “The Convening of the
Irish Boundary Commission” in the current November/December issue of HISTORY
IRELAND.
IRELAND.
It has long been clear that the prospect of a Commission was dangled before
the Irish Delegates by a gang of Bounders when making them an Offer they Could Not
Refuse in December 1921, and that it even deceived those Dail members who rejected that offer to the point of armed resistance in the “Civil War.”
Westminster’s Government of Ireland Act had partitioned Ireland in 1920 and a similarly named Act of 1949, piloted through Westminster by Clement Attlee, predicated on the principle that “for strategic reasons some part of Ireland should remain within His Majesty’s Dominions”
Attlee’s Act purportedly gave the Mickey Mouse “Parliament” at Stormont power to
exercise sovereignty over the Six Counties, and prevented future Westminster
Parliaments from altering or annulling any Act passed by its predecessors. Total nonsense and proof that Attlee was no less a Bounder than Churchill and Lloyd George.
The Good Friday Agreement, as I understand it, gives the British the “Northern Ireland
Secretary” sole discretion whether to arrange for a border poll, or ensure that no
such poll is held before doomsday.
The Agreement was, I thought, so that only voters living on the island of Ireland
would determine its future.
Two years ago the leader of Britain’s Labour Party announced that if a poll was called
that he would campaign for the continuation of British rule in Ireland.
Is it possible to believe that Starmer is any less of a Bounder than Attlee, Churchill, Lloyd George or F.E. Smith and Oliver Cromwell?
Or to believe that the rope, the pitch-cap, the bomb and the gun have no further role
in the relationship of the peoples of these islands?
