The Shallow End of the Pool.Poem  By Randall Stephen Hall

(Unrelated image purely to catch your eye.)

The shallow end of the Pool.
That’s the way it is on Facebook.
Not deep man, not deep enoough, I cus.
Where the water
Rarely comes up to your knees.

“Please oh please,” he thinks.
“When will someone actually read
The words in my post ?”
But the Holy Ghost
Rarely calls these days
As we walk the shores
Of different local haunts
With coffee on our minds
And a breath of fresh air.

Where can you get that
On any platform?
I mourn the loss of intelligent conversation
Sitting in the pig pen that is Facebook,
Being fed “likes, hearts”
And the occasional “comment”.
A man could drown in the silence.
The lack of response.
A huge space
Filled with the smallest of fishes.
We hide in shoals
Amongst the reefs
Avoiding the sharks and seals
Who predominate
With a million likes
And requests for a selfie.

What has become of us ?
As I perch upon my wee shelfie.
Casting out creative crumbs
To those who may never eat them.

Ah now, you girls and boys.
A phone is a tool, not a toy.

    From the Proddy KJV,
    Matthew 7:6

“Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.”

Ah well …i imagine many great and not so great poets
have bemoaned the lack of appreciation and admiration
that their great gifts so obviously deserve…

Not least of them being Patrick Kavanagh, who as he saw it
had shared his brilliance with a mere mortal, unworthy and unable to cherish it:

“That I had loved, not as I should
    A creature made of clay,
When the angel woos the clay, he’ll lose
His wings at the dawn of day.”
