It was brought to my attention, recently, by a man who knows more about the activities of the British in Ireland than I do, that each of the six counties has a representative of the King of England as well as office staff. These officials in each of the six counties are called Lord Lieutenant and Deputy Lord Lieutenant. They are required in order to greet the King when he comes over to visit his subjects in n-ireland. They have a few other duties.
I had heard of these people but never knew who they were or what they were doing here. They were established in 1973 following the reorganisation of local government
Just to fill you in on the names of these amazing people;
Antrim – David McCorkell KStJ
Belfast – Dame Fionnuala Jane O’Boyle
Armagh -The Earl of Caledon
Down – Mr Gawn Rowan Hamilton
Fermanagh – The Viscount Brookeborough
County Derry – Mrs Alison Millar
Derry City – Mr Ian Crowe
Tyrone -Mr Robert Wilson
Their key responsibilities are –arranging Royal visits, presenting King’s awards for Enterprise and Voluntary Service, liaising with local military units and supporting community cohesion.
There are also vice-Lieutenants and several Deputy Lord Lieutenants – or so I am informed. I am not sure who these people are.
Just in case you do not know, there will be occasions when the Lord Lieutenant is invited to take the salute at a march past, either following a Service or at another formal event.
We are going to miss all this.

Lucky old Derry City/County Derry. TWO such esteemed individuals. Going by the seven names, I’d hazard a guess…..maybe one of the seven could be a Catholic?
