Let’s all get Gerry

The spectacle has been almost theatrical — a stampede of certainty from people who have spent decades insisting that the case against Gerry Adams is overwhelming, definitive, nailed to the wall. And yet here we are, watching the eager anticipation of a £1 victory as if it were the capture of some towering prize. A symbolic pound, waved like a trophy. A moral conquest on a technical hill.

Where’s the beef?

Because what has poured forth over the years is not so much hard evidence as endless assertion. Rumour stacked upon rumour. Testimony wrapped in caveats. Sources described as “well-placed,” “senior,” “close to,” or “once in the same room as.”

The chorus has included former figures from RUC Special Branch, anonymous British briefings, and Irish republicans whose hatred of Adams has been both long-standing and volcanic. Their words have been quoted, requoted, embroidered, and recycled until they acquired the patina of fact.

But when the legal lights go on and the oath is administered, the atmosphere changes. Suddenly the mountain of certainty looks suspiciously like a fog bank.

Claims become recollections. Recollections become beliefs. Beliefs become “widely understood.” The distance between thunderous headlines and courtroom-grade proof yawns wide enough to swallow a convoy.

Still, the eagerness remains. The determination to secure even the smallest judicial scratch — a token pound, a symbolic rebuke — speaks less to the scale of the wrongdoing alleged and more to the depth of the animus involved. For some, it has never been about establishing facts so much as confirming a verdict already reached in their minds.

And so the drama continues: vast quantities of words, towering stacks of commentary, solemn nods from familiar talking heads. Yet the central question refuses to go away, stubborn as ever.
