Sinn Féin: red-lines, conflict narratives and remembering our dead

Equality of citizenship in a civilised modern society is not a privilege to be gifted by Unionist politicians. Sinn Féin must expose the red-lines within the UUP-SDLP sham union – before the resumption of Stormont are these parties able to agree a timetable to implement the following:

  • Laws to enshrine women’s body autonomy and LGBT marriage rights;

  • Enact our previously agreed Bill of Rights and Irish language Act, plus affirmative state actions to demonstrably display ‘parity of esteem’ for Irish nation(al) identity within the contested NI region;

  • Release Legacy funds and implement the conflict investigation processes specified in our previously agreed SHA;

  • Restore the previously agreed PfG plan to build a conflict museum and reconciliation centre at the MLK site.

Quell surprise, Unionists are again ‘outraged’ and condemn as ‘sectarian’ a Sinn Féin leader attending a commemoration for Irish Republican combatants killed by British state forces. The same sectarian Unionists who glorify British forces who murdered hundreds of Irish civilians and whom Unionists now demand must escape prosecution.

It’s time to rewind the outrage clock back to the grievances start point and consider the narrative of our ongoing British-Irish conflict from a different perspective…

Imagine, the Nazi regime succeeded in its plan to occupy Britain and over a lengthy period it killed, terrorised, tortured, imprisoned, deported, dehumanised and robbed a great many British citizens.

Got that?

Further imagine, that Nazi regime partly colonised say Devon and Cornwall and before eventually withdrawing from the other parts of Britain it partitioned that region and imposed colonial governance over it from Berlin – keep in mind that within this colonised region the native British were constantly being oppressed, discriminated against, sometimes murdered, burnt out of their homes and intimidated out of their limited job opportunities by the Nazi colonisers.

Got that?

Now.

Think – really think – what would be the attitude of the native British people to the above vista of injustice against their nation?

I believe it’s safe to assume British people would have opposed with every fibre of their being any such Nazi occupation and barbarism. All the aforesaid events happened but to the Irish nation in Ireland and at the hands of a British regime and British colonisers.

To be fair to them, today’s people of Great Britain would almost certainly have come to our assistance were it a different present-day foreign regime responsible for our actual occupation, the actual barbarism against us and the actual partition of our country at gunpoint just to suit a minority ethnic community in Ireland.

We Irish Nationalists continue to feel aggrieved on a number of fronts: our nation remains divided in our native homeland; our local British Unionist abusers now play the victim while ignoring British Unionism in Ireland killed roughly two million plus Irish citizens and abused millions more; those same Unionists started mass acts of violence against us during the 1920s and 30s, and in 1969 they set-off the initial bombs, murdered the first child, adult, pensioner, soldier and policeman and engaged in mass pogroms against the Nationalist community… all of which occurred before the Provisional IRA existed!

Given the above facts, it ought to come as no surprise that when we Irish see the British regime’s Union flag hoisted across our native homeland we view it exactly how we imagine the British in Britain would have viewed a Nazi regime’s flag hoisted across their native homeland.

In 1998, Irish Nationalists and British Unionists agreed a peace deal known as the Belfast Agreement aka the Good Friday Agreement. Since, elected Irish Nationalists have engaged in numerous reconciliation efforts. Conversely, the Unionist community continue to elect representatives who ignore or rebuff such efforts, advising that they can neither forget nor forgive the past (reactionary) violence against their community and state forces.

A supremacist exceptionalism mindset remains strong within political Unionism. If progress is to be made such must be countered by the British and Irish states in any new peace and reconciliation talks. This is the same pro-Brexit NI colony Unionist community who usurped the 1912 Home Rule Bill for Ireland approved by the UK parliament, and all because their minority community opposed that Bill.

If the contested northern region of the island of Ireland is to stop rotting in a poisonous self-destructive bitterness, both the Unionist and Nationalist communities absolutely must face the ‘real’ truth of our troubled past. Then, we must in good faith start working toward building a genuine mutually respectful shared future.

“women’s body autonomy” how many more euphemisms can you come up with for abortion?

What about the body autonomy of the unborn child?

When you talk about Unionists killing the first child why do you feel it would make for a better that we should kill those children yet to be born?

Killing off the most vulnerable is not to me the to the epitome of a progressive society.

I prefer to have an Ireland that cherishes all of its children.

Maith thú Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair… earra ar fheabhas . Belfastdan ,that is your opinion and you are entitled to hold it . In my humble opinion this subject is too complicated and emotional to be bantered about on a political blog. Not living in a female body I don’t know the complications, the anxiety and worry that a pregnant woman goes through but I sincerely believe that women must be allowed to freely debate this first without the hindrance and interference of men…it is their body that is affected.
I have really lost all hope that Unionism ,or for that matter the British , will ever change.Their arrogance and self-exoneration is as breathtaking as it is incomprehensible. They either believe that we are asinine morons or that we will forever accept a few meagerly crumbs from the imperial table…..Newsflash….we’ve had our fill ,no more ,rud ar bith , zilch ! You learn the rules of the game or you’re out ,no more chances. You will learn civility and be treated as equals but only when you respond positively. We WILL build our New Ireland with or without you….the same rules now apply to the gombeen assholes in the Dail.

    Jude

I’d appreciate your view on the Union Flag presented here with a Nazi emblem in the centre.

    How do you read it?

    Hate speech?
    Rhetoric?
Are you in agreement with it? If so, with what do you agree?
    Mistake?
    Lacking in historical accuracy?
Where to the SDLP fit into this?

I mean, you see, if you don’t mind my saying, how does this fit with the respect and equality agenda you (sorry SF) keep harping on about?

Or is this one of those intellectually bankrupt positions which says, ‘All are equal, it’s just that the Brits are less equal than others’?

It is intellectually bankrupt, isn’t it, Dr.?

    Or is it just bigotry?

Maybe he mistakenly used a Union Flag with a swastika instead of a Southern Tricolour. After all, while the British led the fight against Nazism, the Southern Irish chose not to take sides. And, of course, extreme Irish nationalists sought to collaborate with Nazis and even erected a statue to their chief collaborator.

      ========================================

Did Britain lead the Fight against Germany at Munich in 1936?
When the Germans got the Czech defence positions?
Thus leaving the Country completely defenceless.
The Czechs had a better tank that the Germans at that time and it’s fixed defences meant the Germans couldn’t invade.
Hitler would have turned his tanks around and history would have been different.
BTW Churchill called the people of Belfast “Loafers” for nor signing up.
Orange Marches were banned.. Not by Catholics but by the Orange Order; themselves.
It seems even they couldn’t explain how the sight of all these young , fit men who had time to march through Catholic neighbours but not time to march to the signing office to be incongrous.
Belfast Harland and Wollf shipyard went on strike for 6 weeks period and only went back to work 1 month BEFORE D Day in June 1944.
Just one of over 230 strikes during the war, in the wee 6
LOYALITY…. The Brits are crazy for putting up with ye.
After the war the British commisioned at report by the minster for Labour.
Who critised the output of the Wee 6 As strike prone and had a RUBBISH productivity record both in manufactured goods and agriculture.
Do you Know who wrote that Report.
      One Harold Wilson.
Yeah, That’s right the same guy who took to the airwaves and labeled Loyalists ” spongers” in the 1970’s

I guess he should know, eh?

P.s Donal wrote some good articles on here about DeValera and Mussolini and how the british allowed Italians used the Suez Canal.
It might be worth your while reading them.
Yet again this was another opportunity to prevent war.
BTW Ireland did take sides during the war.
Ireland signed over it’s full Deep Sea Merchant Fleet of oil Tankers consisting of about 8 – 12 ships known as INVERTANKERS.
The Irish allowed overflights of their airscape in Donegal and for Hot Pursuit.
The Irish set up a Coastwatch to report to the Allies of U Boat sightings
And also provide weather Data to provide help for D Day.
An Irish army Officer was invited to the U Boat Surrender at Derry.

You are Like Donal Trump with your Fake News.

Learn some history.. It’s clear your head is full of Unionist propaganda and downright lies.
Ask yourself why it’s necessary for Unionist schooling you got to fill you and your mates head with dis information.
It’s designed that way for a purpose. For to sow division.

“Did Britain lead the Fight against Germany at Munich in 1936?
When the Germans got the Czech defence positions?”

Obviously not. It was from September 1939.

“BTW Ireland did take sides during the war.
Ireland signed over it’s full Deep Sea Merchant Fleet of oil Tankers consisting of about 8 – 12 ships known as INVERTANKERS.
The Irish allowed overflights of their airscape in Donegal and for Hot Pursuit.

And also provide weather Data to provide help for D Day.
An Irish army Officer was invited to the U Boat Surrender at Derry.”

Southern Ireland remained neutral. Unlike the UK they chose not to fight the Nazis.
And as noted already, Irish republicans sought to collaborate with the Nazis and erected a statue to their chief collaborator.

“You are Like Donal Trump with your Fake News.:

Given that I haven’t presented any fake news, I’m not like Trump at all.

“Learn some history.. It’s clear your head is full of Unionist propaganda and downright lies.”

I already know the history and my head is full neither of unionist propaganda nor downright lies.

“Ask yourself why it’s necessary for Unionist schooling you got to fill you and your mates head with dis information.
It’s designed that way for a purpose. For to sow division.”

I didn’t get any “Unionist schooling” and such, if it exists, is not necessary, so why would I ask why it is? My head isn’t filled with disinformation.

Do the three of you get as worried about all the Flag burning in July in your Glorious wee Provence in July time of the Year?
As you do about a digital J peg.
Not sure about flag ettituqute but surely the Fabric flag is of higher importance than a defaced digital image>

Also, there is an election soon.
Since you are excited about flags and all; and “worried” about flags would you feel like raising the spontaneous combustion of Irish Polish and Virgin Wary Statues that these electoral representives seem to be photographed in their happy snaps on Facebook
.As for the fleg above.. Maybe the author is unfamiliar with the British Fleg as he hasn’t seen one on Belfast City Hall for a while.

        PF and Gio.
If this piece was a straight forward opinion piece I could understand why you are offended.
However this article took the form of an easy or ALt History in order to make a comparsion.
I see the flag as no different to Len Deightons book SS GB.
I am sure the artwork in that book cover would contain a similar mix of Nazi and English symbols
        I won’t post any.
So therefore I think it’s artistic licence.
IF there was no such essay type writing and if it was a straight more journalistic piece than I think you might be on to something.
Also Amazon have a TV show called the man in The High Castle which uses USA symbols and Nazi symbols.
        It’s a work of fiction.
Albeit it fiction to get people thinking about real world events.

Do you think the piece could have stood without the image given that only an idiot would not realise it would be offensive to some?
It is not offensive to me by the way, I just find it crass and puerile.
Do you think Jude would have allowed a similar image with a tricolour in a piece exploring Irish Republican connections to the Nazis?

          • Oz 2015 February 25, 2017 at 12:59 pm #

            Gio.
Considering that the flag has been discussed more than the article.
Than Yes, you have a point.
            That is enough empircal evidence.
however as I already said disrespecting of flags is hardly a one way street.
And I already argued the Irish flag is treated far Worse. By Far more people. By far more days of the year.
i believe that point is unarguable that the Irish flag is abused more.

Second . I never took any heed of this image.
The British flag is disrespected by the British themselves.
I will completely leave politics and war aside and just mention the Spice Girls.
No flag should be worn as clothing. Never.
Loyalists have union jack Bowler hats umbrellas.etc etc
All that tastetless tat is disrespectful to the flag.
Bikinis made in the image of flags are dis respectful to the flag.

The point of all this Gio is simple.
There are SO Many instances of the British disrespecting their own flag
that to expect an Irish person to be bothered about it. Is unfair.
I would like to draw your attention at this point to India and Amazon.
Amazon tried to sell floor mats with the Indian Flag on it.
India complained and got them removed.
An Indian beauty queen who wore a bikini in the image of an Indian flag was beaten up.
So, How many pieces of tat can I find online that disrespect the British Flag?
And what am i supposed to do about it.
            I have laboured the point.
            But to sign off.
The flag is disrespected so much. That it has lost all meaning to me.
Even the taboo of nazi images Does not make me sit up and notice.
There is no shock value to be had in it for me at any rate.
            Just my two cents.
Ad of course there are two tv series of popular culture.
This is influencing the debate just like Sports occasions become methaphors all the time.
Take all that into account I think it rather diffuses things
Nazis and alternative history are a zeitgeist for the next few weeks anyway,

You are right that the Union flag is regularly disrespected but this is true of the Irish flag too at St Patrick’s Day for example.
However because it happens elsewhere is hardly a justification for it happening here.
Jude takes some pride in his blog being open and welcoming to people of all views., yet this is one example of all too many of how far from welcoming it is.
So why should any unionist bother to comment here when they are faced with stuff like this, and their complaints are brushed off with a shrug of indifference?
Maybe they should just fuck off back to England like the nazi bigots they are, eh?

“If this piece was a straight forward opinion piece I could understand why you are offended.”

In what way is it not straightforward opinion?

“However this article took the form of an easy or ALt History in order to make a comparison.”

First of all this makes it no less a straightforward opinion. Secondly, not only is the comparison offensive, but it is inaccurate. Inaccurate history offends me just as much, especially when such is published on the website of someone who values the rewards of an academic life.

“Albeit it fiction to get people thinking about real world events.”

Which is kind of why, what we say and how we say it is important – otherwise we’re in to straightforward bigotry.

Sorry, but the old, often used on this website, get out clause of, ‘oh it was only this or it was only that and sure we never meant to cause offence, and anyway, it’s not us, it’s the Brits who are offensive’ – has worn well thin.

There seem to be mixed messages. Only the other day Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said they would not disclose any red lines before negotiations and even Michelle O’Neill’s statement about Arlene was merely a negotiating position.

    But why stop there Ruaraidh?

Let us add some more detail to this ‘Man in the High Windsor Castle’ scenario:

Suppose through time almost all of Britain becomes German speaking and provides the german language with literary giants?

Let us suppose that the same afflicted Britain contributes more soldiers and generals to the Wehrmacht (per capita) to invade other countries than any other part of the Greater Reich?

Let us suppose that a British-born general invents the concentration camp?

Let us suppose that Portmouth becomes such an important and integral part of the Kreigmarine und Wehrmacht that it receives a nickname not unlike ‘Khaki Cork’?

Let us suppose that during times of economic hardship the workers from Britain head principally to the Reich for employment?

Imagine that relationships between the two states are so cosy that they become major trading partners and Britain warmly welcomes the Reichschancellor when she pops over for a state visit?

Let us suppose that Britain principally follows the culture of the Reich in terms of food, stupid magazines, telly and (some) sports?

Let us suppose that the British principally support Reich based sports teams in droves?

Let us suppose that Britain weds herself to a church that latterly becomes an enthusiastic user of the Reich apparatus?

Let us suppose that a major figure in fight for recognition of British rights becomes a major influence in the death of English and ascension of German? (assisted by the church of England which cosies up to the Reich for centuries).

But all of this is of course just fantasy, isn’t it…?

The corollary of your opening ‘through time’ and other remarks: dismiss the immorality of foreign British state occupation and partition and portray as positives the choice-denying outworkings of its evilly effective penal laws and other discriminatory conduct.

It’s telling, you avoided addressing thee central question of this blog post: what would be the attitude of the native British people to the above vista of injustice against their nation?

“The corollary of your opening ‘through time’ and other remarks: dismiss the immorality of foreign British state occupation and partition”

  10. giordanobruno February 24, 2017 at 9:46 pm #

I think the point is the image is simply offensive and almost certainly knowingly so.
As someone (MT I think) has already pointed out,it would be easy to do the same thing with the tricolour given the history of republicanism making common cause with the enemies of England, specifically the Nazis, and of course the fascist nature of the PIRA.
Yet I have a feeling Jude would take such an image down pretty sharpish and I suppose that is up to him.
I don’t see how he can pretend there is any sort of welcome here for differing views though, when it is clear that abuse, especially towards unionists, will have a blind eye turned towards it.
In the end we have to learn to speak to each other a bit more respectfully and it is no use saying ‘well they started it’.

    • Ruaidri Ua Conchobai February 26, 2017 at 11:09 am #

      Giordanobruno,
Re-read: ‘Given the above facts, it ought to come as no surprise that when we Irish see the British regime’s Union flag hoisted across our native homeland we view it exactly how we imagine the British in Britain would have viewed a Nazi regime’s flag hoisted across their native homeland’ – would agree the British people would have detested that type of UK-Nazi regime flag being hoisted across their occupied native homeland?
Then, re-read and address the central question of the blog post: ‘what would be the attitude of the native British people to the above vista of injustice against their nation?’

“when we Irish see the British regime’s Union flag hoisted across our native homeland we view it exactly how we imagine the British in Britain would have viewed a Nazi regime’s flag hoisted across their native homeland”

We Irish don’t view the Union Flag exactly as the British would have viewed a Nazi flag under a Nazi regime in Britain.

An entirely dishonest and false analogy.
