Kneecap: a band with balls

There has always been a part of me that wants to make rude gestures and shout abuse at the many self-satisified, pompous people who see themselves ‘decent people’  – or maybe even superior people.

Kneecap have spoken out for me and us all. They‘ve looked at the vicious cruelty of Gaza, they’ve asked who’s to blame for this, and they’ve pronounced judgement loudly and rudely.

TV personality Sharon Osbourne in contrast doesn’t like Kneecap.  She sees Kneecap as taking their performance “to a different level by incorporating aggressive political statements.”  When the BBC asked the trio what they thought of that, their reply was succinct. “Statements aren’t aggressive, murdering 20,000 children is though”.

Their manager David Lambert said “If someone is hurt  by the truth, that’s something for to be hurt by, but it’s really important to speak the truth…Thankfully the lads are not afraid to do that.”

Sharon doesn’t like that sort of thing: “I urge you to join me in advocating for the revocation of Kneecap’s work visa.”

During their recent Coachella set, Kneecap used the screen behind them to state: “Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people”. It also read: “It is being enabled by the US government who arm and fund Israel despite their war crimes.” The final statement read: “Fuck Israel / Free Palestine.”

Kneecap, I think I love you.

Some artists have guts, others pander to the powers-that-be. Back in the early 1970s, in the wake of Bloody Sunday, two of the Beatles recorded separate responses to that bloody event. The BBC banned Paul McCartney’s song; I’m not sure what they did to John Lennon’s offering.

It shames all politicians that it’s left to musical groups to speak truth to power. Lads, I love you.

Advocating for the murder of MPs (if indeed that is what they did) is not really a smart move. Of course loyalist bands who have received much more than fourteen thousand pounds have spouted vile anti Catholic rhetoric with barely a murmer. I’ll not mention the millions stolen by Tory supporters for largely non existent PPE during covid. Sharon Osbourne is obviously cherished off due to her Jewish heritage. I expect Piers Morgan to go on a rant about Kneecap any day now. I won’t be listening of course. Kemi Bad Enoch can kiss my Irish arse.

The irony of Kneecap performing at a music festival supporting Palestine, when Hamas banned outdoor music festivals there. Maybe they should take their 14 grand and reflect on that, or just stick to things they understand.

It would take more balls to support Israel rather than follow the herd.
